38 week apt recap

Yawn, yawn, yawn.

Up a pound but now only measuring 2 weeks behind. Joke is going to be on everyone if I pop out a 9 pound kid.

Blood pressure was great.

Trace amounts of protein in urine for the first time. They aren't concerned.

Heartbeat was 138 - nice and steady.

Dilated 1 cm.

Side note about that. Midwife does the internals - no worries at all. Never any problems. She had a trainee midwife with her yesterday who was, let's just say, not as gentle. Perhaps not so much with the trainees from now on . . .

38 weeks!

How far along? 38 weeks . . .  see this gem from Pregnant Chicken (your baby is not a melon! click here)

Weight gain/loss? Stayed the same. 10 pounds total. Feeling much much bigger than that tho.

Sleep: Would love a little more. Would kill for a little more.
Best moment this week:
Ummm . . . . maybe the sheer volume of work I’ve gotten done around the house? Nah. Maternity pics with Kir were amazing! Also one of my residents told me that I look great and pregnancy agrees with me . . . it was so nice that I almost cried. LOL.
Movement: Still tons. The pregnancy apps/books say that he is moving less now because he doesn’t have as much room but clearly someone forgot to tell him. Love it.
Food cravings:
French fries with ranch. Fruit. Lots of water. I have a big plastic cup at my desk that I fill up over and over
Anything making you queasy or sick:
Food-wise, no.
Labor Signs:
Some BH but they aren’t productive. Nothing else really except general fatigue. Work has been hairy scary and getting thru the day takes all I’ve got.
Belly Button in or out?
Sort of half in and half out. Very weird.
Wedding rings on or off?
On. And I’m going to have to be really suffering to take them off.
Happy or Moody most of the time:
Happier than I’ve been in a while. My dress fits for the wedding and we’re just kind of marking time until this little guy wants to join us.
Looking forward to:
Drs apt today (just a check up) and time with the fam over the next week. YAY!!

Maternity Pictures!!

The lovely Kirsten came over to shoot some maternity pics. Here are my 8 favorites (in no particular order):

The rest of just us:

The rest of Daniel's shoes:

And the rest of the blocks: (Side note on the blocks: looked cool in theory. In reality, little splinters of wood kept coming off. Took them back to Target the next day.)

37 week check!

Yesterday's 37 week check was just as mind-numbingly dull thrilling as you'd expect. Now that I know that Daniel is fine, it's hard for me to give a flying you know what if they say that I'm measuring small. Which, shockingly, I was.

Anyway, according to them, weight is the same. Which would mean no gain in 4 weeks, yet I am large so I am starting to think their scale is broken.

Blood pressure was awesome - 98/76 - Doc did say that with blood pressure being so low, they'd consider letting me go past 41 weeks . . . perhaps even as far as 41w and 4 days (which would be Monday, Oct 21) before the started the induction. Kind of cool.

I did test positive for Group B Strep. Want more info? Check out clicky It's really neither here nor there (just means IV antibiotics during delivery) except that I fear the slippery slope - if the IV is already going, it's a lot easier to say let's just put some pain killers in your IV . . . I'm really wanting a med free birth so we'll see.

The other news is that I'm not dilated at all. Which is good news for the wedding!

37 Weeks!!

** Pic by B!
How far along? 37 weeks . . . FULL TERM!!

Weight gain/loss? Up a pound on my scale at home. 10 total. Feeling much much bigger than that tho.

Sleep: When I’m actually asleep, it’s really good. I’m so tired that I’m not dreaming or tossing around. It’s the getting comfortable enough to fall asleep that’s hard. And listening to B snore makes me a little stabby.
Best moment this week:
Without a doubt it was hearing that Daniel is big and healthy and doing fine. The work baby shower was pretty awesome too.
Movement:
So much! And it’s seemed like he’s been more active during the day, which is kind of fun. He used to flutter a bit in the morning when I’d be sitting at my desk but now it seems constant. Not sure if he’s really moving more or if it is that he’s so much bigger now that I feel everything. Regardless, it’s cool as hell. Def the best part about being pregnant.
Food cravings:
French fries with Ranch from Chilis. LOL. Still. Poor B.
Anything making you queasy or sick:
Food-wise, no.
Labor Signs:
Some BH but nothing time-able. I feel like he’s lower but I’ve also heard that’s a total myth and doesn’t indicate anything in terms of labor. I’ve had general achiness (not pain, let’s be clear) in my tailbone so he might be pushing on something new.
Belly Button in or out?
In. But kinda funny looking
Wedding rings on or off?
On. And I’m going to have to be really suffering to take them off. No swelling at all that I can see altho one woman did “helpfully” tell me that my face is fuller.
Happy or Moody most of the time:
Happier than I’ve been in a while. I think my body has finally adjusted to not sleeping. That, coupled with a major case of “nesting” (damn condescending term) over the last week where everything is totally ready, has helped to curb my anxiety. Carseat is in, nursery is done, etc. We’re good to go.
Looking forward to:
Drs apt today. Actually, they’re kind of a pain because you wait for a million years but it’ll be nice to know if we’re making any progress. Also, maternity pics with Kir tomorrow night . . . yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!

36 Week Scan Recap

Sorry for the disjointed nature of these posts . . . the tons of shower photos mixed with actually having to work at work these last few days has put me a little behind!

Anyway, on Friday, Sept 13 we headed back to the specialist at KU for what would hopefully be our last growth scan. I won't leave you in suspense - it was completely good news! Daniel picked up almost 2 whole pounds. He was 3 pounds and 5 ounces at the 32 week scan and on Friday "Fatty" (nicknamed by his Dad) was sitting at 5 pounds and 7 ounces! Crazily enough, this is still below "average" at 41st percentile but I really don't care.

We are "green lit" for delivery - no magnesium or anything scary. So if labor starts on its own, we'll be allowed to go. Because Daniel is now considered a "normal" baby (anything about 4.5 pounds and below 10 pounds), they won't let me be later than 41 weeks. If I'm still pregnant at midnight on the 17th, they'll induce. He's predicted to be between 6.5 and 7 pounds at birth.

And now the pics! At this point I feel like you are all adept at reading these scan pics so I'll post them without the super-fun arrows of last time.

Profile shot (nose, upper lip and chin):

This was amazing - he yawned during the scan! Even the tech was giggling and saying it was pretty cool. If you're having trouble, this is a zoomed-in profile shot and you can see his nose, upper lip and open mouth.

Next up is his wee foot. Actually, not that wee. She said in real life his foot is just a bit under 3 inches. This is the bottom of his foot. Have a close look - see how the second toe is longer than the first? Just like his mom!

I always love it when they turn on the 3D - here's a full face look. Got to love that he always has his hands up!

Saving the best for last: check out Daniel's mad face!

Work Baby Shower Gifts Round Up

As I mentioned in the last post, the gifts from the work baby shower were fantastic . . . apparently there were several anonymous donations and several large donations so that we would be able to have the big items we were eyeing. In no particular order, we received:

The rest of the awesome baby gates! If you're one of the (lucky) few who hasn't heard me talk about these gates, here's the recap. They are fantastic. They're steel-reinforced, the auto close, they bolt into the door frame . . . I can't say enough about them. They're pricey at $70 a pop so B and I had gotten one and installed it to make sure we liked it - and it was just as amazing as we thought. The plan is one in each living room doorway (done!), one in our bedroom door (done - by me!) and one at the top of the basement steps (done - by me!).

Next up is the Pack'n'Play (playpen for those who are old school!). I'd put the pack'n'play on the registry truly as a wish list item - very nice to have but not a necessity. I was THRILLED to see it tho. It'll be set up in the living room for the first little while until we know how the dogs will react to Daniel. It's great to know that he'll have a safe spot from them while they all get used to each other. The whole thing folds up and can be carried with one hand in case we need to take it anywhere!
The Pack'n'Play, stroller, car seat and high chair are all from the same collection - 'Scribbles' by Graco. What started the whole thing was actually the car seat. I looked up a bunch of infant car seat rankings for both safety (natch) and ease of use and the Graco ones kept scoring really high so then I went looking for one that wasn't ugly . . . the 'Scribbles' line was appealing and all of the pieces were available at Target so there you go. Here's the car seat!
I wanted to see if I could get it installed correctly so I gave it a go. The base holds two ways (you can see if you zoom in on the bottom right) - the first is with the seatbelt threaded thru and then pulled tight and the second is with the black tether straps. The straps click into place on the bar that bolts the back seat to the car's frame. Kind of cool!
I knew I'd gotten the angle set properly when "only blue" was visible but - just to be sure - I went to the fire station and a very nice fire fighter checked it out for me. I had done it properly! He tightened everything as much as possible just to be sure that nothing would wiggle!

The car seat would be cool enough on its own but it also partners with the stroller. Until Daniel is big enough to sit up, the car seat clicks onto it! Check out the tires! We're practically off-roading!

The last item in the 'Scribbles' set was the high chair. For the record, I liked it when I registered for it.
However, once I saw it in real life - and in my newly completed gray and blue kitchen - it just didn't look right. A little too . . . beige. So, I took it and exchanged it for this one which is wooden and  (to our delight!) matches perfectly! It should also be noted that I put it together myself with a Phillips head and an Allen wrench! Took forever. But B says I'm not allowed to use power tools (his concern is mostly for the tools).

We also received the pad for the changing table. It's kind of interesting because you're supposed to attach it to the back of the changing table with canvass straps. Seems like a good idea in theory but that leaves the entire front side a hair wiggly. I'm going to try attaching sticky Velcro straps to the underside of the front as well for extra stability.
I can't remember if I mentioned the whole debacle with the Rock'n'Play Bassinet so here goes. I'd found one I really liked (blue and gray - go figure), had a gentle incline and I was excited to have it by our bed. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says infants that sleep in the same room as their parents for the first four months of their lives are 80% less likely to die of SIDS. Seriously. 80% less likely. Just let that sink in for a sec.

However, less than a week after I'd gotten it, the AAP mentioned that incline bassinets were dangerous because infants who weren't flat on their back had an INCREASED chance of dying of SIDS. So, of course, I took the first bassinet back.

I looked around for a bit and found a flat bottomed bassinet that I put on our registry. Low and behold, work bought that too!! Here it is! And here's Ariki giving it a once over - he approves, grudgingly.

Work also gave us some breastfeeding gifts - a pillow for nursing, a cover so the whole world doesn't have to be in your business and some bottles! The Dr Brown's bottles are supposed to mimic the same flow as breast feeding so that your baby won't decide bottles are easier. We'll see!

The last "group gift" was this stability ball - supposed to be nicer to sit on than a desk chair. Unfortunately, it's too low for me to use at my desk but it'll be nice for labor!

These next gifts came from individual residents.

What would a baby shower be without cute clothes? Check them out!

Ditto for cute toys!

One gift that I'm super excited about is Sophie! Not familiar? Sophie is one of the most popular teethers available and apparently every "good mother" owns one for her child. Don't believe me? She's been featured in Slate and WSJ . . . anyway, the point of this shameless trend following is that she is supposed to be a real favorite of babies and toddlers. Here's the packaging and Sophie in the box.

Sophie was given to Daniel by one of my all time favorite residents. She had a stroke about a year ago and completely lost use over the left side of her body. She's had to re-learn to walk and talk and feed herself. She's also just barely re-learned how to write - been working on it for the last 6 months. Anyway, her favorite niece has two little kids and apparently recommended Sophie. This note was attached to the package - makes me tear up a bit. So awesome!
Next up is this fabulous hand-made quilt made by one of y residents who is in a quilters guild at her church. They make a ton of baby quilts and give them to the local hospitals for NICU babies. This one is nice and thick and should be perfect for tummy time!

Chef Lynn decided that it was important to begin Daniel's food education early - probably in the hopes that he'll be more than just a crock-pot wonder like his mother - with these two books! They are gorgeous and very clever.

Last but obviously not least, we have the "manly" diaper bag that B is very excited about!

So, there you have it . . . spoiled rotten and so very blessed!
